Whirl looked around the tribe happily. Nothing had been so peaceful ever since he became General. He looked to his side to see his mate, a gorgeous golden she-cat named Shine. He nuzzled her as two little kits tumbled at their feet."Behave, you two. Star, stop chasing your brother!" She purred to the small silver she-cat."But Spark started it!" She pointed her tail at the small fiery colored tom.
Whirl purred and licked his kits heads."Listen to your mother." He smiled. Suddenly, rocks began falling from the roof of the cave. There was a low rumbling, and Whirl's stomach churned."That doesn't sound very good." He looked at Shine nervously. She smiled and licked his ears, but a sudden yowl rang against their ears. Whirl looked down to see the small, delicate white and black paw of Running."Evacuate!" He yowled as huge boulders fell from the ceiling.
Shine grabbed Spark, Whirl did the same with Star. The family ran to the exit. As Whirl set Star safely under a tree, he saw Shine drop Spark. She ran back the grab him, the thick clouds of dust getting even thicker. Whirl gasped when he saw a large boulder break free right above their heads."NO!" He began to ran forward. When Shine saw the danger, she threw Spark to Whirl, and attempted to run. She almost broke free, but the boulder pinned her by her legs.
"Shine!" Whirl and the kits ran to the beautiful she-cat as she moaned."I'm okay." She smiled weakly, but then winced."My legs are broken." She looked at the large rock."That's okay. We'll get you out!" Whirl stood up and began to push against the rock as the kits pulled on their mothers paws."No....d-don't" Shine whispered, and Whirl curled up next to her."I'm not leaving." Shine smiled and licked each cat. They all snuggled together as the moon bathed the grass. Whirl realized they were the only survivors. We will survive. He thought with determination. Especially Shine.
As the sun broke into Whirls sleep, he heard the kits crying."What's wrong?" He drew them close to him."Mommy!" Spark whimpered and buried himself into her fur. Whirl turned and shook Shine."Wake up." He purred, then found her body was cold to the touch."No....." He stared in horror and disbelief."No!" The tears burst from his eyes and he buried his nose in her flank. Star and Spark snuggled next to him as they mourned. After much work, they family had gotten her out and gave her a proper burial.
"We will never forget you." Whirl said his last words to the batch of fresh flowers they had laid on the dirt."Come, we must find a new home." He quietly drew Star and Spark away from the burial."We will visit her once a year. Promise?" The kits nodded, and the three roamed the hills.
Whirl woke up one morning. It had been so long, Star and Spark were almost old enough to become To-be's. He woke the young cats, and they blinked at him happily. They were trying to gather themselves together again. As they continued to travel on as they used to, Whirl saw a grey shape through the mist. Out of curiosity, he stepped cautiously forward to investigate. He found that it was a large, comfortable cave. He and his kits slipped into the narrow entrance, and found the many smaller cave linked off of a main dome.
"This is a perfect home!" Whirl smiled, and the kits jumped with excitement. Whirl began exploring even deeper, and found a cave much similar to the old Star Cave."There is even another Star Cave!" He came back out and found a nice perch."We shall rebuild our tribe! We shall be stronger than ever!" He yowled proudly, and the other two cheered."In another moon, I will name you To-be's. Hopefully, a cat in need will come upon us." He came down and nuzzled his kits affectionately.
